Environmental, Economic, and Public Policy and the Oceans

FishHumans have continually made advancements in technology and in quality of life. Some of these advancements have adverse effects on the ocean environment. Burning fossil fuels provides energy and worldwide transportation of people and goods, but it also emits pollutants that contribute to global warming. Commercial and industrial fishing techniques bring more food to more people, but can lead to overfishing in many areas of the ocean.

As the population of the planet continues to grow, governments must create policy to protect the oceans. To begin this effort, governments have set aside areas of the ocean as marine protected areas or marine sanctuaries. In addition, regulations have restricted commercial and industrial fishing and other types of human activity in ocean areas. You, too, can take steps to preserve the ocean by reducing the energy you use, the waste you generate, and by educating yourself and others.
